Vera Johnson & Bettie McDonald.
In 1976, Vera Johnson and Bettie McDonald saw something that mattered — a community that deserved a reason to come home. They didn't wait for permission or funding or a committee. They built it themselves.
The following year, the first Native Omaha Days celebration brought North Omaha together in a way nothing else had. Families came back. Friends reconnected. A neighborhood remembered what it was.
Nearly fifty years later, their vision endures through the Native Omahans Club, Inc. — the organization they founded to protect what they started and to make sure it never belongs to anyone but the community.

The Homecoming
What is Native Omaha Days?
Native Omaha Days is a biennial homecoming celebration that brings former and current residents of North Omaha together, a tradition born in 1977 and held every two years since. It’s not a festival put on by the city or an event organized by a third party. It is a homecoming created for and by the people of North Omaha, hosted exclusively by the Native Omahans Club, Inc.
And the celebration has always been about reunion — about giving people who grew up in the neighborhood a reason to come back, reconnect, and remember where they come from. Over the decades, it has become one of the most enduring cultural traditions in Omaha’s history.
